Kids of Africa Athletics Club promotes both competitive and recreational athletics for the enjoyment and benefit of individuals and groups alike. Our priority is to create a training environment that is safe, inclusive, fun, and supportive.
We offer balanced, age-appropriate training programs that focus not only on physical development but also on character-building. We believe that success in athletics and in life is achieved through consistent dedication, knowledge, wise choices, a positive mindset, and collaboration while maintaining respect for all.
Additionally, we advocate for athletics as an ideal activity for lifelong fitness and well-being. Our club actively participates in regional, national, and international events, and we regularly organize training camps to further enhance the skills and abilities of our athletes.
Our Vision
“We want to be a positive reference for both competitive and recreational athletics in Uganda by being an inclusive club where everybody feel they belong and can thrive.”
Our Mission
“To inspire athletes of all abilities and backgrounds to fulfill their potential and to have a lifelong love for the sport by providing a stimulating athlete-centered club environment led by dedicated and qualified coaches and support staff.”
Our History
Dr. Burkhard Varnholt, founder of Kids of Africa, and also an avid runner, with Dorte and Tage Budolfsen.
For Tage and Dorte Budolfsen, long time leaders of Swiss/Ugandan Kids of Africa, running is natural, it is healthy, it clears the mind, and does not require much equipment. And it can be done anywhere, alone or together with others. A perfect life accompanying activity for them.
The roots of Kids of Africa Athletics Club can be trased back to 2009, when a group of children at Kids of Africa one day decided to join newly arrived Tage and Dorte on their usual morning jog.
More would join in the following days, and not before long, a group of children and adults had signed up for a running event at the International School of Uganda.
It was a fun outing, and in the following years participation in running events became a normal thing to do.
Perhaps inspired by the international world class runners of Uganda, some of the children became really fast. But most important was that it was fun to participate.
Years later, in december 2022, Coach Moses Asonya, former international top runner, and Esbern Budolfsen, then a volunteer at Kids of Africa, met up and decided to test whether the recreational running at Kids of Africa could be upgraded to also include a more structured training program – open for all passionate runners – that could transform runners from being ‘good’ to put them on track towards being the best they could possibly be.
Still going strong, ticking off the miles in the vicinity of Kids of Africa.
So, during the three long school holidays during 2023, an open training camp was set up at Kids of Africa where passionate runners could meet and train together under the supervision of Coach Moses Asonya. The news of the camps spread far and wide, increasingly attracted the attention of national level athletes from all over Uganda that would then join the camp to enjoy the quality training and the good fellowship. Popular demand from the athletes led to considering establishing a club. A step that was completed in January 2024.
